The furore and acres of media space allocated to the decision on Monday of George Lee to walk away from his cushy well-paid Dublin South seat back into his cushy well-paid South Dublin media job could signal the beginning of the end for the practice of parachuting celebrity candidates into political life when in most cases they are ill suited to the change of role. The psyche of the politician does not sit well with the psyche of the ego-led media world which we inhabit. The cynicism necessary for the latter means that the former cannot be done with any great integrity. Even the few who have made the crossover from media to politicis are still viewed dubiously as ‘hiding it well’ in the new job.

Mayo Remembrance Concert is a unique event which will take place in the Royal Castlebar Theatre and Event Centre on Monday, October 6. This special concert is being held in honour of all those from County Mayo who served and died in both world wars and in the many conflicts of the past century in the cause of world peace. The fallen will be permanently commemorated in the Mayo Peace Park Garden of Remembrance which will be officially opened on the following day by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.

I met a man last Sunday evening and he asked me two questions. Firstly he asked me if I knew why do we bury referees 50 feet under? I hadn’t a clue but his reply was that deep down they’re really nice people! He then asked me what was the difference between a referee and a battery. Again not knowing the answer he informed me that a battery has a positive side.

I havent a clue how to use it but I can hardly ask the secretary, some things have to remain private. Every time you switch on the wireless, the TV, or read a few paragraphs in the broadsheets these past few weeks there seems to be nothing but doom and gloom vying for your attention. George Lee seems to be the only one happy with his lot and I know quite a few people who are steadfastly refusing to engage any of the above activities, unless it is a music channel, a movie or something light-hearted on TV, or the perusal of the sports pages.

Let’s face it, it’s all a bit depressing. Now I’m all for optimism and looking on the bright side, but there comes a point when you just can’t take any more bad news.
